ARCHITECTURAL

STUDIO 6

2017

Semester 6 forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architecture programme. This capstone project is based on the theme of architecture with a social impact and the resolution and integration of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Architecture Module: Architectural Design Project Design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing strategy to resolving social issues pertinent within the conditions of the urban landscape (for example, elderly, neglected communities, school, youth center, people empowerment, skills training center and others).

Project 1a-

Pre-Design Analysis

This module is a thematic studio based on the theme of “sustaining humanities’ architecture for people, place and time. Designing for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in our time within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, It upholds the believe that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that it can have a role in making a place civilized by making a community more liveable.

1.Reviewing building code and local or city ordinance

2. Initiative on establishing design parameters,

3. Take initiative consider and study solar analysis and other site specific analysis

4. Research on precedents or do actual visitation to projects related and directly relevant to the proposal

5. Research on demography, user profile and understanding who we are designing for

There are several guidelines that provide the scope of your proposed project as follows:  3-5 stories/levels (basement car parking does not count).  1800-2000 sq.mts. built up area (gross floor area).  Proposals are to be taken from 3 suggester building typologies.  Parking lot/layout (based on Uniform Building By-Laws and Local requirements).  Compliance with city planning or local guidelines and requirements.  Shall tackle and address the issue on site and look forward to aligning design addressing the needs of the site and user.

Project 1b-

Architectural Proposition & Design Strategy Proposal

A more detailed and finalized Project Brief will be developed in this part of the project (Project 1b), the second stage of the 3 part project. In this part students will refer to what they have presented and understood in the Part 1a: Pre-Design Analysis. We are expected to further develop and finalize the Project Brief and Programmatic Responses (part 1) leading Design Strategies (part 2). In Project Brief and Programmatic Responses (Part 1), we are tasked to: a. write the final Project Brief, b. fully develop the programme or project requirements, c. diagrammatically show analysis on site-strategies, d. develop and resolve space programming and e. rationalize with a programme and design related research and precedent studies.

The building should also allow for a minimum of car-park spaces (refer to UBBL guidelines/ requirements, roughly 20 slots) and a loading/unloading space for a minimum of 2 service trucks. Our scheme must also provide for a proper drop off zone for your user. Appropriate landscape space should also be included.

In The Design Strategy Proposal (part 2), in this phase of design we will be taking the data gathered and through the fields of the survey will create 2-3 or several options for consideration. We will study, analyze and further develop these ideas and options through the use of conceptual drawings such as sketches, diagrams and study models to visualize different routes and approaches to the project.

Detailed Design &

Final Executive Report

Subsequent to Phase 2: Design Strategy and Schematic Design phase, students are required to further develop scheme with the incorporation of environmental strategies and technological resolutions. The intention of integrating the E&T aspect is to strengthen design on the aspect of sustainability and buildability. Student will have additional guidance from their E&T tutor who will look into improving Image: sectional perspective of building with all the integrated aspects the green and sustainability component, suggesting on passive cooling techniques and technological innovations. The studies will be included in a 5000 word comprehensive design report. This phase is integrated with the module Building Technology 2. The co-requisite module will look into how to improve the structural aspect and buildability of the project.

Based on your proposed sketch design, consider and include expanded aspects of design development in tandem with the design of spaces, e.g. regulatory requirements, fire safety, materials, construction, sustainability, feasibility and other relevant considerations, wherever possible, integrating their development to produce a richer, more multi-layered design. Develop a selected portion of your design for technological development and resolution. Tectonic thinking in design approach. Integrate environmental strategies into your design. May look into current sustainable trends and design features. To present work in a most comprehensive, systematic, creative and comprehensible manner.
